The Ordinary, a Canadian skincare brand is from the parent brand DECIM. The Ordinary range of skincare line has been a huge hit across the world. Mainly because this line focusses on offering clinical technologies in its purest and simplest form. There are no frills in any of the products and hence the price point is quite attractive.
Let me give you an example. A skincare brand might be marketing their moisturizer with the claim that it has hyaluronic acid or vitamin C. But the actual product will have many many other ingredients including a base, preservatives, colorants, fragrance or in case of a natural product i might have oils, butters, plant extracts etc. The percentage of hyaluronic acid or Vit C could be very less. But The Ordinary range provides you these hero ingredients by itself in simple dropper bottles or tubs, which allows the brand to cut down on other costs, hence making the range affordable.
So this line mainly targets specific skincare problems like hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, dark circles, dullness, dryness etc and is for an informed consumer, who has researched on these ingredients. The range includes Exfoliating Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Cold presser oils, Vit C, Peptide complexes in Antiageing formulas, Moisturizing formulas etc.
Today I am reviewing the multi peptide anti aging formula from The Ordinary, called Buffet. I did not want to get an active strong ingredient from the range as such products require special care in skincare and should be used with caution. For eg: if you are starting with an acid exfoliator like AHAs, you need to make sure you start at a lower concentration first, say Lactic acid 5% + Hyaluronic acid. Once your skin is accustomed to this, you can increase the concentration gradually or move to stronger AHAs like Glycolic acid. Also since AHAs makes the skin photosensitive, one needs to apply it during the night ideally and use sun protection for the following days.
Eventhough I am a skincare enthusiast, I like it to be a relaxing experience rather than an exhaustive one. So I chose Buffet because it is already a soup of acids, peptids and probiotics and also is a starting point for targeting signs of aging. I didn’t want to step in to proven solutions like retinoids and Vit C in the beginning. Baby steps.

Description : Like an opulent feast for the skin, The Ordinary’s “Buffet” serum features an impressive array of anti-ageing wonders – at a surprisingly tiny price tag. Multiple peptide complexes combine in this lightweight serum to offer a multitude of benefits, including Matrixyl 3000 to stimulate collagen synthesis and hyaluronic acid to offer the heroic hydration that ‘plumps up’ fine lines and diminishes depth of furrows. Working in synergy with 11 skin-friendly amino acids, with regular use this ultra-smoothing serum will reveal nourished, youthful-looking skin.
Packaging : It comes in a translucent glass bottle with simple label and a dropper.
Price : 10.83 pounds (It says 12 pounds on the site but that includes taxes in EU. once you add it to cart and checkout, you will see the final price for your country). This is not at all pricey considering the ingredients and actives in this. If you find this pricey, the peptide based serums in market from US and K Beauty brands costs anywhere between 14$-35$ atleast.
Their lesser ingredient formulas are much cheaper.
Buy from : CultBeauty website. They have worldwide free shipping offer often (there is one today).
I have bought The Buffet last year and I almost finised using it. It is a water based serum with a runny consistency (not as runny as water) and three drops is enough to cover the face. There is no color or fragrane and the solution is slightly hazy. I liked how easily the serum gets absorbed into the skin during winter months. But when humidity is high, it feels slightly tacky for 5 min after which it gets absrobed completely.
I have combination skin type and my skin doesn’t break out often. This serum has to be applied right after cleansing and will last you quite long eenthough you get just 30ml.
Will I repurchase Buffet : No
I didnot find any incredible changes on using this product. It is a great serum especially for oily skin and is moisturizing without making skin oily. It does improve the quality of skin while you use it but no drastic improvements that would make anyone want to repurcahse this. But this is a great serum to include if you want to follow the K beauty 5 skin or 7 skin layering method. It can be layered based on your skin’s need and will for sure smoothen out skin if you have dry patches.
So incase you are new to this brand, I would suggest you read about the products in depth (there are many many detailed reviews and articles on each product and what skin type it suits) and make an informed decision based on what skin problems you want to target. Their hyaluronic acids, AHAs and Vit C suspensions are in great demand and is concentrated enough to show visible results.
The snail mucin from K beauty brand Cos rx has been another cult favorite and do comment below if you would like a review of the same.
