Junaili apricot body scrub : Simple and pure

This is the review of the simplest and purest body scrub I have ever used. For those of you, who are new to this brand, here is a small brief.

Junaili makes cold pressed apricot oil with the finest apricot grown in Himalayas, maintaining high quality. They make pure cold pressed apricot face and body oil apart from the scrub. It is a family owned brand and the products are made in small batches.

Coming to the review, I am quite impressed at how a scrub from an Indian brand, made of one pure ingredient can be so effective, when compared to a whole bunch of other scrubs in the market boasting exotic ingredients from all over the world. For starters I am not a big fan of sugar scrubs. Mainly because the sugar tend to dissolve away in a jiffy when rubbed on wet skin.I like to massage the scrub for a while for maximum benefit and nut shell scrubs like walnut kernal ones tend to be harsh at times. If not any of these, the scrub can be a bit drying for my already dry skin.

But the junaili scrub doesn’t belong to any of the above category. Read the specifics below:

I received it in the December reverie box. You can also buy it individually from their site.

Buy from : here
Price : Rs 275 for 125g
Ingredient: Cold-Pressed Apricot Kernel Scrub
Texture and fragrance : This product reminds me of the classic malt horlicks. The smell is slightly similar as well, pure and ‘apricoty’. The scrub is a gritty powder.
Packing : The scrub comes in a travel friendly plastic jar with a metal screw cap. There is foil seal on the mouth of the jar for protection from spillage. I have just made a small hole in the foil, and all I got to do is shake the jar to get the powder. This ensures that the product doesn’t get contaminated with water when kept in bathroom.

How to use this scrub to suit your skin type

the scrub in its dry form and when mixed with Gia ginger lilly body oil

1. For oily/sensitive skin : Combine the scrub with water to make a paste.Massage it all over the body or on those dry areas. Water makes the scrub smooth and mushy like oats and hence doesn’t irritate sensitive skin.
2.For dry/flaky skin : Mix the scrub with body oil (any light body oil like almond, apricot, olive oils),it stays gritty and helps slough away all the dead skin without having to use more product (as oil doesn’t make the scrub mushy). Using a body oil also gives that extra boost of moisturisation. I generally mix it with Gia body oil (read the review here), which is a very light oil with mild floral fragrance. I wash the scrub off and without cleansing with soap, as this oil moisturises skin without making the skin oily.

Inshort why I recommend the Junaili scrub:

1. It is as pure and natural as it gets
2. So easy on the pocket and affordable for everyone
3. Is versatile and can be used as mentioned above to suit your skin type
4. Light weight, travel friendly
5. Very effective as a body scrub

February favourites

Hi All, I am so happy to welcome you all to my ‘own’ blog, ‘flavoursofbeauty.com’. This is going to be a post on february favourites. I know that many of you who follow me on Instagram are looking forward to this post, because you all have been incessantly asking me about the details of those gorgeous afghani chandbalis. Yes I have included it here.So here are my feb favourites.

1.Bamboo tooth brush from happy healthy me

Happy healthy me, is an organic store located at Indiranagar and you would have seen my haul picture in Instagram. I bought a couple of organic food products and this cute little bamboo brush. The bristles are not so soft if you think that’s how natural brush bristles feel like. But the head is quite small. So it reaches all those nooks and corners in the mouth and just does a good job in cleaning your teeth.

2.Juicy Chemistry favourites
Yes I have written many many posts reviewing JC products and if you didn’t know, Juicy chemistry is now available at #myNykaa (here). There will be 15% off on JC products in Nykaa most of the time. So keep an eye for that. The tea tree essential oil and lemon-spearmint lip balm really worked for me. The oil is versatile and I am coming up with few DIYs for you, on how you can use this oil with your skin care products to reduce acne, dandruff etc. The lip balm is rich in essential oils and is more on oily side than creamy. It melts on contact with lips and moisturizes it well.

3.Krya anti-dandruff hair cleanser

I have oily scalp that tends to get itchy on the third day of shampooing. Eventhough I use natural shampoo bars, it didnot help me reduce the dandruff. But this grain based cleanser surely did. I bought body oil, body cleanser, laundry powder, face cleanser and hair cleanser from Krya. Purely ayurvedic and organic certified, I trust and love Krya products. The oil secretion of my scalp has balanced with just couple of uses and it doesn’t get itchy anymore. Detailed review coming soon.Buy krya products here

4.The Skin Pantry Rhassoul Clay mask
This clay based face mask is the latest buy and I have only used it 3 times so far. Love the skin tightening and toning effect of this one. It is on the expensive side, but I am loving it.This mask has a whipped mousse like consistency and has moroccan rhassoul clay, organic apricot oil, vit e oil and organic rose hydrosol as ingredients. Check them out here

5. Now for the most awaited product : The gorgeous pink afghan chandbalis
I bought this and another set from an insta store called #dropdeadg (dropdeadgorgeous) and let me tell you, I have been on the look out for these in many insta stores and dropdeadg sells it at the most economic rate. Do check out their insta page. I also bought this green ones from them which are equally lovely. The packing is cute and pretty, the delivery was fast and the products look exactly like the pictures they showed me. Very impressed with this store. Since I bought two products, they gave me a discount on the total.

Skin Yoga Green Tea Face Mask Review

Hello everyone, so it has been a happening week with the Navrathri and related festivities around.  I went to Mysore and the sight of Mysore palace adorned with lights at night, was breath taking. You can view the picture at my Instagram page.

It has been a while since I did a single product review post. Mostly because it is easier to compare multiple products to understand them better. I received a sample pack of this skin yoga  face pack with #Smytten box, and this one is worked well for my combination skin.

About The Brand

SkinYoga is a 100% natural skincare brand owned by three sisters. They travel far and wide to get the best natural ingredients to formulate each product. All products have simple but effective ingredients and are not packed with goodness from ingredients we are all familiar with. The find the simplicity of formulations refreshing.

mix

Packing : The product comes in this cute little vintage looking wooden box with a yarn thread to keep the lid closed. The mask comes in a small glass bottle with a cork stopper. Also there is a jute nest inside the box, that acts as a protective package.

Price : Rs.1,750.00 fro 50gm. Yes I know, very very expensive.

Ingredients : Rice flour, Oat flour, and organic green tea

Texture : The mask is in a light green powder form. When mixed with warm water (as recommended), it becomes a smooth paste. Also just a quarter of teaspoon of powder, kind of increases in volume when wet and sufficient for face.

About the product :

Inspired from the ancient Japanese skincare regime, this green tea based, antioxidant rich face mask slows aging and wrinkles. This is a 100 percent natural acne control formula that removes toxins from your skin and gives you a more youthful appearance.  Organic Green Tea works as a very effective sun guard and acne control agent. Rice flour acts as a natural whitening agent and adds glow to the skin.

My experience using the face mask:

I was familiar with the brand, as I make sure I keep updated on, all natural skin care brands. But I never felt like investing so much on a face pack that can be easily made at home with same ingredients. Anyway since I got this sample free with the subscribed box, I gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised.

I was getting a lot of breakouts recently and my skin felt quite irritated, even though I don’t slather any chemical laden products on my skin. I mixed a small quantity of the powder with warm water and applied it to wet face. I kept it for 10 minutes and washed it off before it was completely dry. This is very important when ever you use face masks that tends to dry out skin.

My skin felt very refreshed and soft. The minor acne seems to have settled a bit and clearly my skin felt a bit brighter. Since this is a sample, I use it only when I see any new breakouts as I don’t want to finish it up fast.

Pros:

  • Controls oiliness of oily/combination skin
  • Makes skin soft and smooth
  • Fragrance is mild and completely natural
  • Settles mild acne and redness without drying out skin
  • Simple but effective ingredients
  • Mild brightening effect
  • Very pretty and eco-friendly packaging

Cons :

  • Extremely pricey for the quantity and ingredients
  • Not sure of its performance on highly acne prone skin
  • The brightening effect doesn’t last much long
  • Not travel friendly as full sized product comes in a bulky glass jar
  • Might not suit people with dry skin

I don’t think I will purchase this, as it is too expensive for a skin care product. Also you can easily make this product at home at very low cost.

Don’t blindly follow the crowd

So what, you read about this awesome product this new blogger wrote about and you have to have it. Why? Because she said it is a miracle product and worked wonders on her skin.

Please don’t do that.

I have seen people writing reviews on how wonderful a product is. And that might be the only product of its kind that they have used so far. So there is no comparative study there.

Don’t just blindly follow and buy based on such feedbacks. See, when switching to chemical free products you will know the difference instantly. But that doesn’t mean that the first product you tried is the best and you should recommend it to people.

When you use products with different ingredients over long period of time, that is when you know the effects and differences between different brands and products.

10 tips to find the right product:

1. Before buying a product read multiple reviews from authentic reviewers and users.

2.Try to understand the ingredients in the product and how it suits your skin.

3. Understand your skin type and the reviewer’s as well, before jumping into conclusions. A product well suited for one skin type might not suit others.

4.Write to the product people and ask your queries and let them help you choose the best product for your skin.

5. Contemplate if this product is really required in your skin care regime. Don’t just hoard unnecessary products.

6. Natural ingredients doesn’t mean it won’t harm your skin. Essential oils are very potent and if not used in right quantity with right other ingredients it can trouble your skin.

7. Try to read reviews from people who have tried out different brands and products, so that the reviews are actually a comparative study and you find out something better than what you think is best.

8. Ask questions. Clear out your concerns. Your skin is not a place to experiment.

9. If you have found out the right product in all categories of your skincare, stick to it.

10. Understand your skin first, it’s concerns and needs and try to find simple solutions. Most of the time we end up spending a lot on solutions that are easily available at home.

Kokum Butter Balm

I came across this interesting product in an NGO organic outlet in Whitefield Bangalore. The brand name is Vanastree.

About the brand:

Vanastree is an all woman seed saving initiative in the Malnad region. It is a small collective, dedicated to promoting forest garden biodiversity and food security through the conservation of traditional seeds.

All their products are organic, hand made and hand packed. They sell food items, snacks, honey, jaggery syrup, rice, turmeric powder etc as well.

balm1

I had not heard about this brand previously but the ingredient list and price caught my attention. Organic lipbalms sold by most of the brands comes in tubs of 8-10gm or tubes of 4-5 gms and it costs atleast 100Rs.

This one costs just 50Rs and that too for 15gm.

Ingredients : Kokum butter, bees wax, base oil, camphor, teak extract.

Camphor and teak extract are ingredients I have not seen in balms before.

ba

Fragrance : Smells of camphor and it is very soothing.

Packing : The quantity is great and it comes in a glass tub with golden screw cap.

Feel : This is like any other balm with more of thick gel like consistency than oil. It is red in colour because of teak extract.

balm2

My experience with the product :

This tub lasted me a really long time. Actually close to an year. The ingredients are pure and of excellent quality. I have very dry and flaky lips, irrespective of the season. This balm instantly hydrates the lips and only a small quantity is required. It has the soothing smell of camphor and as an added benefit, you get red glossy lips without using any chemical laden lip gloss. It doesn’t get absorbed easily because of its thick consistency. So it remains on the lips and hydrates it for a long time. Also on buying Vanastri products you are helping and encouraging a non profit organization.

Love the product!!!

They usually sell in selected outlets and in exhibitions. The outlet info is available in their fb About page.

K Organics Rose water review

I have reviewed their honey rose scrub in a previous post and I had really liked it.

Two of my favorite honey based scrubs

Rose waters bought commercially might not be pure rose water. Read the ingredient list carefully before buying. It might have synthetic fragrance, preservatives and parabens. Studies have proved that using such products not only damages skin in long term but can also cause health issues when used continuously for long.

roses

Pure rose water can be made easily at home by  heating rose petals in water in a closed vessel in low heat for a while, till the petals loses its colour. This can be stored in refrigerator. Also I have read about keeping rose petals in water exposed to sun, for all the oils to seep into water.

There are brands like Kama Ayurveda and Oil Craft Naturals selling steam distilled rose water. But I find them quite expensive. So when I found pure rose water sold by K-Organics for 130Rs, I was more than happy to try it out.

Ros1

Price : 130Rs for 100ml

Benefits : Hydrates skin, reduces blemishes, improves complexion, promote cell renewal, reduce dark circles, closes pores, improves skin texture, balance skin pH, natural toner.

Fragrance : There is a mild natural fragrance of rose and it is definitely not a synthetic fragrance. Also I noticed that after about 6 months, the fragrance  of left over product was completely gone.

Packing : It comes in a plastic bottle with screw cap. That is a low since it can’t be sprayed.

My Experience with the product :

I am not a big fan of toners. I don’t regularly use it in my skin care regime. But after getting this rose water, I started dabbing it on my face after I use face masks. I used it up in about 3 months and well I can’t say it stays true to its claims. It did not bring any changes to my skin tone or make it soft. It definitely did not reduce dark circles or reduce blemish.

Yes it hydrates the skin, keeps it cool for sometime and reduces dryness. It did help after using clay masks that stretches the skin. So if you are a regular user of toners and would like to have an organic option which is pocket friendly, you can try this.

Let me know what toners you like and if there is any that was really effective.

Spicy Apple Pie anyone???

Juicy Chemistry offers a wide range of gourmet soaps and I got a chance to try few samples. I have reviewed their Hazelnut and vanilla latte soap previously. Did this one impress my skin as much??? Read on…

ApplepiePC: Juicy Chemistry

Price : INR 475 + Rs 100 shipping charges

Ingredients : Shea Butter,  Kokum Butter, Distilled Water, Sodium Hydroxide (Lye), Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Castor Oil, Cinnamon Essential Oil, Sea Buckthorn Oil, Apple Juice

Buy from: http://juicychemistry.com

Fragrance : This one has a spicy smells, owing to cinnamon essential oil. It is not over powering and is quite refreshing.

Feel :PicsArt_05-30-03.43.23

As you can see, this soap produces a yellowish brown lather. It doesn’t leave the colour on skin and gets washed off quite easily.

My Experience:

This soap is different than other organic soaps I have used, as the fragrance is not the normal floral/herbal or citrusy smell but spicy. And you can see that the ingredient colour transfers to the lather, which feels like using natural ubtan mix on skin.

All the soaps I used so far from the brand, leaves skin squeaky clean but I don’t find this moisturising. My skin is quite dry and I need to moisturise it after bath. The soap is quite refreshing and ideal for summers.

Yay or Nay?

Does this suit all skin types??? Yes, it leaves a squeaky clean skin but you won’t be satisfied incase you have very dry skin and you expect your cleanser to moisturise as well.

It is on the pricey side with addition of shipping charges. But the ingredient list is impressive and the brand uses certified essential oils and is against animal testing.

The brand offers many more varieties and I want to try them all 🙂

BoN: Bio Organic & Natural

BoN is a journey that started out in Auroville and has grown to a successful organic skincare brand that strongly believes in woman empowerment.

The brand ensures, ‘All  products are Natural, non-toxic and organic ingredients. None are tested on animals.’

I came across few variants of aloe gel from the brand and chose the saffron one. The brand provides a wide range of skincare and bath goodies.

11752434_969219676450986_6445545872118827467_n

Ingredients:Aloe Vera gel, Organic papaya extract, Natural Glycerine, and Organic Lemon oil.

Aloe gel is an all purpose gel which is an excellent toner and moisturiser for oily & combination skin types.

Price: Rs 168 for 100gm

Product Claims : This unique preparation of saffron, aloe vera gel and natural papaya extract gives positive results on regular use. A glow upon the face & skin and a protective & restorative effect may be the results upon regular use of this gel that restores & promotes healthy skin while helping to calm, tone and rejuvenate the skin from within.

Experience :
The usual ones you find in stores are green in colour, so I found the different ingredients here interesting. I use this as toner after cleansing my face, if rose water is not available. Also as a moisturiser during summers, as this gel perfectly mattifies my combination skin.

I cannot vouch for the product claims, as I was not a regular user of the product. I used it as a toner and it calms the skin instantly.

How I apply : I take a small quantity of the gel and pats it gently on my face rather than rubbing it all over. This is the better method to apply moisturisers as it gets absorbed to skin effectively this way.
Also you can make a nice refreshing face pack by mixing aloe gel, honey and lime juice. This tones the skin and gives a subtle glow to the skin if uses regularly.

Two of my favorite honey based scrubs

  1. K-Organics Honey Rose Scrub

To know more about K-Organics, see my post https://www.facebook.com/BeautyFlavours/posts/969544213085199

K.jpg

The Honey Rose scrub from K-Organics, is the simplest but most effective scrub I have used till date.

It has just two ingredients, honey and rose petal powder.

Price > Rs230 for 150gm

Packing > Comes in a squeezable pack. This is too thick to be packed in a bottle.

Consistency > The scrub is thick as it is a paste of honey and rose petal powder, and has to be mixed with water to apply evenly on skin. There are no visible beads or particles but the scrub action is so effective as the rose petal powder is mixed with honey. It creates a sight tingling sensation on application.

Fragrance > Smells like honey

Effectiveness > No separate massage is required as washing it off with water itself effectively provides scrub action. The skin looks clearer and brighter with all dirt and grime removed.

The honey moisturises the skin and rose petal powder provides effective exfoliation. This is very mild and can be used daily.

It removes sun tan and makes skin fresher and brighter.

No preservatives, no chemicals and has the purest ingredients.

2. Just Herbs Livelyclean Honey Exfoliating Face Cleansing Gel

Site > http://justherbs.in

Packing > Comes in a bottle.

Price > Rs 395 for 100ml

Main Ingredients > Neem ext., Tulsi , Symplocos bark, Arjuna , Bitter orange peel, Curcuma longa, Honey, Jojoba seed meal.

Consistency > This has a runny consistency with tiny exfoliating particles. It doesn’t need to be mixed with water.

Effectiveness > The scrub is very gentle and cleanses face effectively. Needs to massage the face to effective scrub action. Moisturises skin and doesn’t stretch the skin.

Fragrance > It has a mild sweet pleasant smell as it has fragrance added separately .

Both the products are my favourites and I will definitely repurchase both. Both are very gentle and suitable for all skin types.

IMG_20160411_184629

On the right is the honey-rose scrub and on the left is the lively clean scrub. As you can see, the consistency is thicker for honey-rose scrub and it is just pure honey.

Lively-clean is easier to use and washes of effortlessly.

Juicy Chemistry : Choco-Vanila Body Butter

#‎juicy_chemistry‬ My favorite body butter for winter. My tub is already over.

Product : Choco vanilla body butter.

juicy2

Price : 400 INR for 50g. Now I noticed that the price is not written on the tub.

Product claims : Moisturises and nourishes, protects from sun damage, aroma therapeutic.

Smell : It is a blend of chocolaty vanilla smell…very different from the smell of normally available cocoa containing products.

Packing : Out of all the natural handmade products I have bought so far, juicy chemistry stands tall in terms of packaging. Each product even though bubble wrapped is enclosed in a very sleek looking black packet.
Also product comes in a light plastic tub and juicy chemistry provides a cute wooden spoon to take the product without contaminating it with your fingers.
Aweeeesomeee!!!

Ingredients : It is made of all natural butters- coco, Shea and essential oils- jojoba, sweet almond, vanilla, coconut, olive, vit-e oils.

juicyjuicy1

Feel : Perfect for winters. As you can see the swatch, it easily melts on contact with skin and spreads evenly. A bit oily in the beginning but once blended leaves the skin smooth and soft.

I got this body butter from them last year. Since then I have bought products from them thrice. This is a great product. Especially the smell, as it lingers for a long time. I feel it is more apt for winters as I prefer light creams for summer.
For summers you can try other variants of body butter from the brand : they offer a lot of varieties.

As you use up the butter, you get these dark chocolate bits (see the swatch below). It just melts on skin and nourishes and gives a glow to skin over a period of time. I am not quite sure of the sun damage claim as this didn’t really protect my skin from tanning and there is no SPF mentioned in the tub. But I guess the natural oils has the protection factor in it that soothes the skin on exposure to sun.

My first tub is over. Can’t wait to try the other body butter variants from the brand smile emoticonsmile emoticon
