Suganda Skincare White Lotus Moisturiser Review

Suganda is a skincare brand I explored recently.

I was familiar with the brand, since I follow most of the Indian natural skincare brands. I bought this product while there was an offer running. The products of this brand reminds me of Korean skincare products. The ingredients are mostly actives that are used widely in Korean skincare. That itself is quite remarkable for an Indian skincare brand. But this is also a recent trend and formulators use these ingredients, whether or not it is required in a product.

But for few exceptions, moisturisers from Indian natural skincare brands don’t usually come in a variety of textures. It is usually balmy or an oil based cream/lotion. It can suit many skin types but not all climates. For example, I have never come across a moisturiser that suits the intense humidity of Kerala. That’s why I formulated a water based pudding like cream (you will find it in the Insta page) which is light and fluffy and perfect for the hot, humid climate.

I chose to try the moisturiser for this reason, eventhough Suganda also had interesting products like BHA and AHA serums.

Before getting to the review of the Suganda White Lotus Moisturiser, let us talk about moisturisers.

Why are moisturisers important in skincare?

Moisturiser is essential in skincare, especially if you have oily skin. You might wonder why. Do you know that dehydrated skin produces more sebum and makes skin extra oily?

The requirements for a healthy skin changes with climate, food habits, hydration requirements of the body, stress and your overall wellbeing. Incase the skin is dehydrated, sebacious glands over produce sebum to compensate for the dryness. Don’t confuse oiliness with hydration/moisturised skin.

A well moisturised skin will be balanced and will not be dry or oily. The type and ingredients of a moisturiser varies with your skin requirement.

Dry skin needs multiple layers of moisturisers to maintain suppleness. Directly using oily serums or creams will not help, as this forms an occlusive layers on the skin without any hydrating elements underneath. This can further dry out the skin. You should add a water based moisturiser or serum, followed by a thicker cream or oil to form a barrier that locks the moisture underneath.

If you have oily skin, you might want to opt for toners and oil free moisturisers that would help in balancing the sebum.

Lack of ample moisture on skin can also lead to wrinkles, spots and premature ageing.

Also sunscreen is not a moisturiser. It has to be applied on top of a moisturiser for better coverage and protection.

White Lotus Moisturiser Ingredient List

My take on the Ingredients

There are many interesting ingredients that are generally not found in Indian natural skincare products. Sodium Palmitoyl Proline is a substitued amino acid which serves the purpose of skin conditioning.

Reading upon white lotus extract, I found that it is known for calming and relaxing effects. Even used as an opiate and is an aphrodisiac. In the Suganda moisturiser, it serves as an anti inflammatory agent.

Vit B3 or Niacinamide is one of the popular ingredients in Western skincare. It helps in reducing dullness, uneveness, fine lines etc. Vit B5 or Pantothenic Acid helps in improving smoothness and softenss of skin. It is deeply hydrating and can stimulate healing process of skin.

Also there is Hyaluronic acid, which is one of the celebrities among moisturising ingredients of recent times.

White Lotus Moisturiser review

A water based moisturiser is usually in a gel form in the market. But this one is is a translucent serum with is slightly runny. The texture is somewhere in between the watery Neogen essence and viscous and slimy, Cosrx snail mucin.

The perfect viscosity

Best things about the texture is that it is non sticky and gets absorbed as soon as it is applied on skin, which is great when you are in a humid climate.

The fragrance of the essential oil mix, is quite relaxing. Not too intense to bother any sensitive noses. But there is also an option to order this without fragrance.

If you have dry skin, you definitely need to layer this up or use a slightly heavy moisturiser on top. Try to use as less as possible first and then use more if required.

The product is expensive, but a pump or two from the narrow nozzle is enough for the face. The easily spreadable texture and consistency helps in sparcely using the product. I will update later, on how long one bottle lasts for me.

My skin was quite oily in my teen years but never acne prone. Using natural skincare products and taking care of my skin over the years has balanced out the skin. I would say my skin is quite healthy. But this is in Bangalore. When I visit Kerala on vacation, the humidity just makes the skin dull and lifeless. One or two pumps of White lotus moisturiser helps in controlling this effect of humidity on skin. It is quite calming on skin and doesn’t take time to sink in. There is no tightened feeling on skin after using this, which is common to gel based moisturisers.

I am sure this product would benefit all skin types, especially if you have problematic skin. Give it a try and let me know your thoughts.

Yes, this product has Phenoxy ethanol as preservative, which is a popular alternative to parabens these days. But I am not complaining, because a water based product needs a strong preservative and usually preservatives adds up to less than 1% in a formula.

And let us be realistic, travel friendliness of a package depends on how you travel. I carry all my skincare products (even the ones in glass bottles and tubs), everywhere I go. You just need to be a little careful and pack it well, that’s it.

Final thoughts

Suganda white lotus moisturiser
Little bottle of potent ingredients

I mean, how fantastic is that a home based skincare brand came up with such an amazing texture. Congrats Bindu on creating basic skincare products packed with actives that really makes a difference on skin. I shall surely write more on this product in Insta, after I finish it up and see any noticeable difference on my skin. For now, it is a great moisturiser for humid climate, that suits especially normal to oily skin type.

I use it as a day time moisturiser under sunscreen. I don’t have to wait for this to sink in before using next product, which makes it perfect for working day mornings. At night I prefer a thicker cream. Also owing to the cost, I don’t want to layer it much and use it up faster.

All natural and vegan deodorant : Burst of Happyness Lavender & Grapefruit Deodorant cream

Sweating is the cooling mechanism of the body. It is a way of eliminating toxins. Think of the saunas and steam baths, in most variants of natural medicine or as a method for relaxation and improving health.Sweating improves circulation and kills harmful bacteria and virus. Taking steam from a small brass pot, followed by a medicinal coffee made by my grandma is till date, my most effective remedy for fever. Sweating cleanses pores, which is why taking a steam before applying face masks, improves its efficacy. Sweating is the way of excretion from the body’s largest glad, the skin.

Our skin has sweat glands all over the skin. So what happens if you put stoppers in all the pores, through which the body can release toxins? This is exactly what you do when you use anti antiperspirant sprays or deodorants. We use it because we think not sweating is the best solution for odourless underarms. Sweat doesn’t have odour, but the body odour comes from skin bacteria breaking down the sweat secretions. Also using chemical laden deodorants has many harmful effects on our health which includes darkening of skin and hormonal imbalance.

So the solution is not to clog the sweat glands, but to find a solution for the odour, while letting the body do its detoxification. So here is one product, that is all natural, vegan and can be used by all skin types.

Lavender & Grapefruit Natural Deodorant Cream

Brand: Burst Of Happyness

Product claims : A one of its kind natural deodorant cream which helps to eliminate body odour and inhibit bacterial growth.

Baking Soda has natural deodorizing qualities. Arrow Root Flour helps to absorb moisture. Jojoba oil has a non greasy texture which resembles human sebum and helps to soften the skin. Cocoa Butter is rich in vit E and offers great moisturizing benefits. Coconut Oil has anti bacterial properties. Sunflower oil is a light oil which is easily absorbed and it offers anti inflammatory properties. Essential oils make sure that your pits smell good all day long!

This deodorant cream contains no water, therefore doesn’t need ANY chemicals to preserve, emulsify, thicken, etc. . It is all natural and free from aggressive chemicals like parabens, aluminium compounds, which are linked to various health issues.

Ingredients:

Price: Rs 620

Packing: The deo cream comes in a small glass tub with a plastic lid. Can be easily carried in a small hand bag.

Texture: The product is not a fluffy cream, but has a dense formula. In hot regions, this might slightly melt as it is made of oils and butters. So it has to be refrigerated or stored in a cool place. My product has not changed its form as it is a pleasant climate here, and I usually scoop it out with a wooden spoon or using my fingers.Once it comes in contact with the skin, the product melts. On massaging, it turns slightly grainy because of the fine particles and gets easily absorbed into the skin.

Fragrance: It is a unisex fragrance and is the highlight of the product.

Buy from : BOH Site or from Amazon

My take on the product:

I don’t find any inconvenience to take out the product as it can be easily scooped out. The cream is not very smooth but on touch with the body, it melts and spreads easily on skin. It doesn’t feel sticky or oily on skin and gets easily absorbed in a few minutes.

The product has a pleasant fragrance. If you don’t like strong scents, this one is for you. The fragrance is imparted by essential oils and not by chemical perfumes. The notes of grapefruit mixed with lavender is a very calming scent that reminds me of bergamot fragrance. But because it is all natural, the fragrance fades after around 3-4 hours but the unpleasant odour is still kept at bay all day long. Incase you sweat profusely for long hours, I would suggest reapplying the product. I think I would love the fragrance of the rose variant more.

I also apply this cream on my pulse points for its fragrance, eventhough I wish it stayed longer. The cream is very moisturizing, thanks to the butters, oils and glycerin. So it will not dry out or stretch your skin, like the normal deodorants. Also it has not caused any irritation or discoloration on my skin. But it is always advisable to do a patch test before using it directly.

The arrow root powder and kaolin clay helps to absorb moisture from the skin and I think these ingredients are the culprits for giving the slightly grainy texture of the product when in the tub. The best part is that even though the quantity seems less, a very tiny amount is all you need for one time use. So I am sure that this small tub is going to last me long.

This is more than what you would need for one application.

Also this product can be doubled up as a body butter, as it effectively moisturizes dry patches on skin.

Overall this is a great alternative to toxic deodorants and can be used daily without disrupting the natural body processes. I would surely buy this again but mostly the another variant as I would like to try all the fragrances.

Multi-mask with easy DIY anti-ageing and black head removing masks

These days you see alot of brands coming up with masks with rare and exotic clays and ingredients from all over the world. It really makes you think at times that only those expensive ones can satisfy your mask cravings. But let me tell you that, with simple ingredients from your kitchen, you can make amazing masks that brightens, tightens, lightens and clarifies the skin and can even provide anti aging benefits.

You can also muti-mask with these 2 DIY recipes. Use the first mask all over the face and the second one as a black head removing strip on nose and cheek area.

So without further adieu let us see my the recipe of two of my favorite masks. Also remember, these masks are made of pure natural ingredients. So make it fresh and do a patch test before applying on face. Even natural ingredients can cause irritations and redness if it doesn’t suit your skin.

Anti aging & anti pimple mask

Ingredients : Cinnamon powder, honey and lime extract (I use organic products to be safe)

Mix half a tsp of cinnamon powder with 2 tsp honey and 1 tsp lime extract. Vary the quantity accordingly to make a paste of slightly runny consistency. Adding more cinnamon may cause redness, irritation and burning sensation, so be careful and do a patch test.
Apply this mix evenly on your face and neck avoiding eye and lip area. This gives best results when used as an overnight mask.

Benefits of honey-cinnamon mask :
1. Cinnamon plumps the skin by stimulating blood vessels and thereby reduces fine lines over time
2. Honey hydrates the skin without making it oily
3. This mix helps to dry out acne and it fades away blemishes fast
4. Studies shows that Cinnamon seems to increase collage expression on the skin through cinnamaldehyde, its main chemical component.
5. It unclogs open pores and removes dead skin and excess oil.

Peel off mask for removing black heads, skin brightening and removing tiny facial hair

Ingredients : Gelatin powder, milk, turmeric(not the one used for cooking, you need to get kasturi manjal(Wild Turmeric)

This is a very versatile mask and you can try this with different ingredients like lime juice, activated charcoal powder, honey, cinnamon etc.Turmeric brightens the skin and behaves as an antiseptc so I like using it. Now you need to use your intuition and adjust the quantity of ingredients here to get the right consistency. I use about 1 tbsp of gelatin (for just the face), 2 tbsp of milk and half tsp of turmeric.

> Apply this mask on a clean face with no makeup
> Keep a straight face and do not talk while this mask is on, for it to give the desired benefits.

Mix the milk(room temp or warm) and turmeric and add it to unflavored gelatin powder. You can either microwave this mix for 10sec or dip the small bowl with the mix to another bowl of boiling water and mix it continuously until it is a lump free mix. Do a patch test before applying it on face. If the mix cools down you can warm it up again. The mix should be warm and not hot. Now apply it on your face avoiding eye, eyebrows and lip area. This step should be fast and the mix tends to cool down and harden fast. Apply it in the same direction as hair growth. Wait until the mask cools down completely (10-15min). Now grab an edge of the dried mask and slowly pull it in upward direction. Be gentle and careful.

Benefits :
1. Removes blackheads, whiteheads and tiny facial hair
2. Unclogs pores and makes skin squeaky clean
3. Instantly brightens up your face
4. Gives the effect of a facial with visibly smooth skin
5. An inexpensive and effective alternative to commercial pore strips
6. Tightens skin and smoothen out fine lines

If you have sensitive skin please try this out on a small patch on face before using it. Do not use soap or any chemical products after using this and if stepping out, use a sunscreen.

* Agar-agar is the vegan alternative for Gelatin. You can also apply this mask just on the nose area as a black head removing strip.
